the daily drool

Mazeppa è un breve poemetto scritto da Lord Byron nel 1819, tratto dalla Storia di Carlo XII di Voltaire. La vicenda di Mazeppa, personaggio realmente esistito nella Polonia del XVII secolo, è diventata celebre, più che per il filosofo francese, proprio grazie a Byron, il quale l'ha trasfigurata poeticamente. Intriso di tanti temi cari al gusto romantico - l'amore, il genio, il rapporto uomo/natura, il Sublime, la fierezza della natura, la lotta per la vita - ma anche di un'ironia che spesso riesce a stemperare i toni, Mazeppa diventò in breve uno dei miti più sfolgoranti del Romanticismo europeo. Fu così immortalato da molti pittori - da Eugène Delacroix a Louis Boulanger, da Horace Vernet a Théodore Géricault, da Théodore Chasseriau a Achille Deveria - e messo in musica da Franz Liszt e Pëtr Il'ic Caikovskij. La vicenda - a metà fra storia e leggenda - narra di Mazeppa, un giovane ucraino che viveva alla corte del re Giovanni Casimiro e che un giorno fu scoperto da un nobile polacco a letto con sua moglie. Torturato, fu legato nudo strettamente su un cavallo, lanciato poi al galoppo nella prateria. Dopo tre giorni e tre notti di corsa irrefrenabile "attraverso fitte foreste, tundre gelate, valloni solitari, fiumi impetuosi, lupi famelici e la solitudine di spazi deserti", l'animale cadde stremato proprio quando si imbatté in un branco di cavalli indomiti. Il giovane fu però salvato da un'anima pia e diventò addirittura così potente da vendicarsi del suo aguzzino.
